Chess champ checks opponents

IF you think that chess takes lots of concentration, spare a thought for Doonside resident, Tony Bouchaaya.

At the Blacktown Centenary chess event on Saturday, he played 30 games to begin and another six at the end of the first hour. He had 29 wins and seven draws.

Bouchaaya is not only the Rooty Hill RSL Chess Club champion but a four-time Chess Olympian.

His opponents included top Sydney player Adrian Rose, who managed a draw.

The oldest competitor was 73-year-old Marco Brijeski but about half of the challengers were children, aged from six upwards.

The next chess event will be a junior tournament at Bowman Hall, Blacktown Council Chambers on Sunday. Details: David Evans on 4739 2785.
